Suman

Description

Long before the age of takeout and pastries, there was suman—steamed glutinous rice delicately cooked in coconut milk and sugar, wrapped in banana or palm leaves, and tied with care.

Suman’s origins go back to pre-colonial Philippines, where rice held spiritual and communal significance. It was traditionally prepared as an offering to ancestors or for special occasions like harvests and religious feasts.

What makes suman so special isn’t just the ingredients—it’s the way each region adds its own twist. In Laguna, you might find suman sa lihiya, soaked in lye water and served with latik. In the Visayas, suman sa ibos is rolled tighter and served with ripe mango.

Simple, humble, yet steeped in history—suman is a taste of Filipino heritage, lovingly wrapped and passed from one generation to the next.
